UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Penn State head coach James Franklin lauded his team's resilience and determination after their hard-fought 45-17 win over Minnesota on Saturday at Beaver Stadium.
The Nittany Lions got off to a fast start, scoring three touchdowns in the first quarter to take a commanding lead. Quarterback Sean Clifford threw for 247 yards and three touchdowns, while running back Nick Singleton rushed for 134 yards and a score.
Penn State's defense dominated in the second half, holding Minnesota to only three points. Linebacker Curtis Jacobs led the way with eight tackles, while cornerback Joey Porter Jr. had two interceptions.
Franklin expressed his pride in the way his team handled the challenges of the game, particularly after Minnesota scored two quick touchdowns in the third quarter.
"Our guys showed a lot of heart and resolve today," Franklin said. "They stuck together and played as a unit, which was crucial in overcoming adversity."
The Nittany Lions' offense was balanced and efficient, with Clifford distributing the ball to a variety of receivers. Tight end Theo Johnson had seven catches for 66 yards and a touchdown, while Parker Washington added four catches for 58 yards.
Despite Minnesota's early success in the passing game, Penn State's defense adjusted and limited the Golden Gophers' opportunities.
"We made some adjustments at halftime and the defense stepped up in the second half," Franklin said. "They kept Minnesota's offense out of rhythm and gave us the momentum we needed."
With the win, Penn State improves to 6-0 on the season and remains atop the Big Ten East standings. The Nittany Lions will next face Michigan on the road in what promises to be a highly anticipated clash.
"We're proud of this win, but we know we have a lot of work ahead of us," Franklin said. "We'll enjoy this for 24 hours and then get back to preparing for Michigan."
