The College Football Playoff (CFP) committee has released its latest rankings, setting the stage for a thrilling postseason tournament. Defending national champion Alabama remains atop the rankings, followed by Georgia, Michigan, and TCU.
Alabama (10-1) has been dominant throughout the season, with wins over ranked opponents such as Texas A&M, LSU, and Mississippi. The Crimson Tide's only loss came to Tennessee in a nail-biting overtime game.
Georgia (10-0) has been equally impressive, winning all of its games by double digits. The Bulldogs have a stout defense that has allowed just 12.9 points per game, the lowest in the country.
Michigan (10-1) has rebounded strongly after losing to Michigan State earlier in the season. The Wolverines have since won seven straight games, including a convincing victory over Ohio State.
TCU (10-0) is the Cinderella team of the season, entering the CFP rankings for the first time. The Horned Frogs have defeated several ranked opponents, including Texas, Oklahoma State, and Oklahoma.
The CFP semifinals will take place on New Year's Eve. The top-ranked team will face the fourth-ranked team, while the second-ranked team will play the third-ranked team. The winners of these games will advance to the national championship game on January 9.
"Alabama is still the team to beat," said former Heisman Trophy winner Desmond Howard. "They have a balanced offense and a defense that can shut down any team."
"Georgia is another powerhouse," added ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit. "They are well-coached and have a lot of talent on both sides of the ball."
Based on the current rankings, Alabama and Georgia are projected to meet in the national championship game. However, Michigan and TCU are both dark horses that could make a run at the title. The CFP tournament promises to be one of the most exciting and unpredictable in recent memory.
